If I were to describe Botanicula — the sort-of spiritual sequel to indie point-and-click puzzle/adventure Machinarium — I’d say it has the strange other-worldly charm of Oddworld, happy nonsense-words music similar to Sigur Ros, and fun but not mind-bendingly difficult puzzles that remind me of playing Pajama Sam as a kid.  Is it actually as good as any of those things?  Yes.  Should you read this review anyway?  I’d like it if you did.

It has been out for quite some time now, and it has taken me about two years to get around to finishing it, but I have finally completed the Xbox Live Indie Game darling Apple Jack.  Now, what the hell is Apple Jack, and why did I come back to it after two years?

It really feels like something special when you find a game in the Xbox Live Indie Game section that actually feels like it was made by someone who knows a thing or two about videogames.  Like Escape Goat and Lair of the Evildoer, Lots of Guns is a surprisingly fun Indie Game that sells for dirt cheap.

Breakout (or Arkanoid, to some) has always been my favorite of the “classic” arcade games.  Not just for the brick-breaking, but the huge amount of powerups (or power-downs) that are thrown at you over the course of a game.  What would happen, then, if you took Breakout and gave it the brightly-colored, slightly RPG tinge of the Legend of Zelda series?  You’d get Wizorb.

It seems like Roguelikes are making a comeback.  Dungeons of Dredmoor, 100 Rogues, Legends of Yore and now The Binding of Isaac are all recent examples of additions to the masocore, die-once-and-start-over genre of RPGs that I personally find myself addicted to due to the games’ emphasis on everything being completely random, and the sheer number of things that can go wrong (or in very rare cases, right).

Yet another example of an XBLIG title taking a now-standard flash game idea and making it something worthwhile, The Cannon takes the tired “shoot things with a stationary cannon” genre and gives it some unique flavor to make it seem like slightly more than just shooting the same three enemies with an immovable, rotating howitzer.

You know those physics-based flash games that seem to have grown in popularity for no real reason?  The ones where you control a cannon, or a guy with a bow, or some kind of shooty-thing, and you have to hit a specific target (or targets) by aiming with your mouse?  Star Ninja is kinda like that.  But with an Xbox controller.  And a ninja.

Pirates, too!

Lair of the Evildoer, an Xbox Live Indie Game by Going Loud Studios, may not seem like anything special just by looking at the screenshots.  To me it seemed like yet anther top-down shooter, this time with a few RPG elements taped on to make it seem unique.  Upon trying the demo, however, I found myself quickly persuaded to buy an interesting and surprisingly well-made shooter/RPG with enough charm to truly separate itself from much of what can be found in the Indie Games section.

You never know what to expect from an indie game.  Most indie developers lack the budget or team needed to make a really well-rounded game, but you can usually tell there was a lot of love for the game itself during development.  Skylight by Dragoon Entertainment is a good example of this.  While it may look cheap on the surface, there’s enough underneath that works surprisingly well to make the game somewhat enjoyable.

What is it that makes a game with a name like The Impossible Game so attractive? You want to be the one to prove it’s not impossible!

The first thought that pops into your head is, “What makes it so tough?” When I first saw The Impossible Game on the Xbox LIVE Marketplace in the Top Sellers section, and I just had to see if it truly was “impossible.” With it being only 80 Microsoft Points ($1 USD), I saw no harm in getting it. And let me tell you, this game has the difficulty to back it up its name. Continue reading »
